Meeting NRW Aquaponics

Meeting NRW Aquaponics

A report of our participation in the “Networking Meeting Aquaponics in NRW”  on May 18, 2017 in Wuppertal. We presented our company and participated in the panel discussion.

The meeting for people interested or ambitious in aquaponics in NRW
The meeting was organized in cooperation between the Arrenbergfarm in Wuppertal and the Verein der Urbanisten e.V., supported by the Department of Agriculture of the University of Applied Science Südwestfalen in Soest. The venue was the Villa Media in Wuppertal. Although the meeting lasted only one day, many lectures were offered by interesting speakers. We also had the opportunity to introduce our company in a short speech. The meeting was moderated by Pascal Biesenbach (Klimaquartier Arrenberg / VPP).

A brief outline of the other lectures of the day follows:

  • What is Aquaponics? – Rolf Morgenstern (University of Applied Science Südwestfalen)
A brief introduction to aquaponics with an overview of the functionality and its various possible characteristics.
  • Projekt URBAN GREEN TRAIN – Bernd Pölling (URBAN GREEN TRAIN)
Within the framework of the project, learning opportunities regarding innovative solutions for urban agriculture are offered. This includes an intensive exchange between science and business. The project is funded by the Erasmus program of the EU. (URBAN GRUEN Education for ENTeRprising Agricultural InnovatioN)
  • Fish health and animal welfare – Rolf Morgenstern (University of Applied Science Südwestfalen)
A very interesting lecture, that was improvised for a would-be speaker. It involved the necessary prerequisites for dealing with fish (certificate “Ordentliche Fischhaltung”) and how to avoid diseases in aquaculture and how to look for appropriate therapies, when quarantine is necessary, et cetera.
  • Klima Expo.NRW – Dr. Michael Walter (Klima Expo.NRW)
An interesting lecture about the project that consists of many individual “flagship projects”. The subject matter of the projects vary greatly from wind farms to sustainable building management to sustainable waste management. The projects can be viewed on the project map of KlimaExpo.NRW.
  • aquaponik manufaktur gmbh
An overview of our goals and the current tasks and projects.
  • Integrated plant protection – Dr. rer. nat. Peter Dapprich (University of Applied Science Südwestfalen)
This lecture looked more closely at the cultivation of plants. As an expert in hydroponics, Mr. Dapprich addressed the requirements of different plants and reported how deficiencies or a surplus of nutrients does affect plants. The lecture contained also many interesting facts regarding the chances offered by aquaponics .
  • Aquaponics and Social Work – Yvonne Fischer (Dipl. Soz. Päd., Köln)
The focus was on the possibilities offered by aquaponics in connection with social work. An example are social projects in which, inclusion, reintegration or work-therapy could be combined with sustainable production of food. The combination draw interest among many spectators.

Pause and panel discussion with the following participants
Jörg Heynkes, Rolf Morgenstern, Dr. Peter Dapprich, Ingo Bläser

  • The project Arrenbergfarm – Jörg Heynkes (Projekt Arrenbergfarm)
This project involves a large number of measures, which are to be implemented on a former federal railway site measuring approximately 60 hectares. In addition to aquaponic plants, processing plants will also be installed at the same site, such as breweries or restaurants, that will process the sustainably cultivated foods.
  • Plantastik –  Niels Rehkop (Plantastik)
Niels Rehkop presented the recently completed prototype of an small aquaponic plant, which he plans to market together with Tobias Seifert under the name Plantastik. The focus here was first on the requirements for such an installation and the question as to which operations would be reasonable or possible for end users. The theme was continued after the meeting.
  • Aquaponics at the University of Applied Science Südwestfalen (Soest) –  Rolf Morgenstern
This project focused on the status of aquaponics at the Univerity of Applied Science Südwestfalen. In addition to many specific informations on the fish and plants cultivated there, the information on costs and profitability, which were also discussed, were interesting for us.
  • Food Safety – Dr. Eberhard Büker
A lecture on the dangers and problems that may arise in connection with the production of food. Many important examples from the past (such as EHEC) provided important information as well as tips.

After the meeting at the Villa Media, all the participants went to the parking lot to view the showcase of the initiative “Aufbruch Arrenberg”. This plant consists of a deep sea container and has a greenhouse. The plants principle is already known, since it was already presented in this form as “Farmbox” on the site of ECF-Farmsystems (picture see below).
